We’re South Carolina Spray Foam Insulation, a family-owned company that’s spent more than 15 years insulating homes and commercial buildings across Greenville and the rest of the Upstate. Spray foam is how we make our living, so a post about when not to use it might look odd coming from us. But we evaluate houses every week from Spartanburg to Anderson to Seneca, and plenty of them don’t need our product — or don’t need it everywhere.
We’re writing this because the opposite pitch is easy to find. Insulation marketing tends to treat foam as the answer to every question, and we regularly walk into homes where a previous quote recommended foam for assemblies that plainly didn’t call for it. So here it is in writing: the situations where we talk people out of our own product.
Where Foam Earns Its Keep
Foam does three jobs at once — it insulates, it air-seals, and in closed-cell form it controls vapor — and it packs high R-value into a few inches of thickness. In our humid Climate Zone 3A, that combination is genuinely hard to beat in certain spots:
- Crawl space foundation walls and rim joists, paired with a ground vapor barrier, where moisture off the red clay is the enemy
- Rooflines on homes where the ductwork runs through the attic
- Bonus-room knee walls and other tight cavities where thickness is limited
- Any assembly where air leakage is the real problem, not just R-value
In those places we recommend foam without hesitation. The rest of this post is about everywhere else.
Where Fiberglass or Cellulose Is the Smarter Spend
A big, open attic floor. If you’ve got a flat ceiling with a wide-open attic above it and the goal is simply more R-value over the living space, blown fiberglass or cellulose will usually deliver the target R-value for less money. Foam priced per board foot across that much area adds up fast, and on an open horizontal run you’re paying for air-sealing and vapor performance the assembly may not need. We don’t install fiberglass or cellulose — when we make this call, we’re pointing you to another product and another contractor, because it’s the right one.
A vented attic that’s already working. Plenty of Upstate homes — we see them in Greer, Easley, Simpsonville, and across Greenville — have a traditional vented attic with decent soffit and ridge airflow and no ductwork up there. If that attic stays dry and the ceiling plane is reasonably tight, foaming the roofline solves a problem you don’t have.
A modest problem on a modest budget. If your house mainly leaks air and needs a small R-value bump, targeted air sealing plus blown insulation over the ceiling gets you most of the benefit for considerably less money than a full foam job.
New construction with the ducts inside the envelope. On new-construction jobs, if the design keeps ductwork inside conditioned space and vents the attic, blown insulation at the ceiling plane is a legitimate, lower-cost assembly. We tell builders the same thing we tell homeowners.
The Budget Math
We price foam the way the industry does — per board foot, meaning one square foot of coverage at one inch thick. Open-cell runs $1.00 to $1.60 per board foot installed. Closed-cell runs $1.60 to $2.60 per board foot installed. Thickness multiplies the cost — two inches is roughly double one inch. On a few hundred board feet of crawl space wall, that’s money well spent. Across a whole attic floor where R-value is the only goal, the same math argues for blown material.
The smart play on a tight budget is usually a split: foam where it earns its keep — crawl space walls, rim joists, the leakiest penetrations — and less expensive batts or blown insulation on the open horizontal runs.
And don’t pay closed-cell prices for a job open-cell, or plain batts, would satisfy. Closed-cell earns its premium where moisture and limited thickness are real constraints. Over a dry, open attic floor, it doesn’t.
Duke Energy serves most of the Upstate and offers rebates for qualifying insulation and air-sealing work, and those programs aren’t limited to spray foam. Amounts vary by measure and change annually, so confirm current amounts before you schedule.
On the federal side, the 25C energy-efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025, and no federal insulation tax credit currently applies — no matter what a quote written last year says.
When the Assembly Simply Doesn’t Call for It
Some of this is physics, not budget. Foam is overkill anywhere none of its three jobs — air sealing, vapor control, high R in thin space — actually apply. An open attic floor with good ventilation doesn’t need vapor control at the roofline. A ceiling plane that can be tightened with a day of targeted air sealing doesn’t need two inches of closed-cell doing the same job at many times the cost. We’ve walked out of attics in Taylors, Mauldin, and Clemson and told the homeowner to buy blown insulation and sealant instead. It costs us the job, and it’s still the right answer.
None of this is an argument that fiberglass belongs everywhere in the Upstate. In a damp crawl space in Zone 3A it’s the wrong material almost every time — that’s most of why we’re in business. The material isn’t good or bad on its own; the assembly decides.
One Question We Hear
If fiberglass is fine in the attic, why do you tear it out of crawl spaces?
Moisture. In a dry, vented Upstate attic, blown fiberglass or cellulose performs well for decades. In a damp crawl space, batts absorb condensation, sag, and quit working within a few years. Same material, different physics — which is really the point of this whole post.
